Review of Glen or Glenda (1953) by Mahmoud Y — 19 Apr 2011
I have to give credit to Ed Wood for wanting teach his audience a lesson in tolerance, I applaud him for striving to make a movie despite the complications that stood in his way, but I denounce him for making a genuinely messy motion picture.
Half way through the picture my brain had gone numb, and by the time it was over I went straight downstairs for the liquor cabinet. The acting is mostly bad, the script is rotten despite the admittedly decent points it raises, the stock footage doesn't work at all, and while Bela Lugosi was obviously trying, nothing he says contributes anything to the narrative.
If Wood really cared as much about film making as he claimed, he would have gone the extra mile to make his directorial debut a lot more coherent.
