Review of Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning (2004) by Samuel M — 28 Jan 2012
An interesting entry in the Ginger Snaps franchise, but it can not measure up to the previous films. A prequel, this installment takes place in a Canadian trading fort in the 19th century, and follows sisters Bridget and Ginger.
They never bother to explain how the same characters who appear in the previous films which are set 200 years in the future appear here, but whatever. Much faster moving with much more action than the previous films, but somehow the soul is gone.
In the first entries, there are few main characters, which allows for greater time for character development, making the audience bother to care what happens to them. In this film, character development is sacrificed for more action, and a bunch of characters who mean nothing to the viewers, other than being werewolf fodder.
The subplot involving the werewolf child is just silly. The script and direction are all decent, but lacking. Still an interesting and above average werewolf flick, but I recommend it only to fans of the first two films.
