Review of Gigi (1958) by Adam Z — 09 Feb 2009
If you ask me, this is a fairly ordinary film. What sets it aside from other musicals, other than Maurice Chevalier? It feels like just another story about a dim-witted girl turned into a beauty. Leslie Caron is decent in the title role, but nothing special; and the movie itself certainly doesn't rank among Minnelli's best.
It's obvious why this movie won Best Picture in 1959- it's pure Oscar bait. "Vertigo" or "Touch of Evil" should have won that year instead.
