Review of Gigi (1958) by Akramul I — 28 Mar 2016
This is the prime example of a piece of cinema that would not make sense in any other time period than when it was made -- the concept is pretty questionable of a 30 something rich bachelor falling for a teenager "blossoming into womanhood" (blegh).
I mean, the opening song "Thank Heaven For Little Girl" is sang by a smarmy 60 year old man with a twinkle in his eye like Winnie the Pooh staring at a pot of honey for godsakes. And yet, and yet.
..I cant help loving this charming tale! Is it the romantic parisian setting? The catchy tunes? Gigi (Leslie Caron)'s infectious energy and smile? Bachelor Gaston (Louis Jourdan)'s handsome expressions and french accent? I'm baffled by how much I love this movie and I'll be humming "The Night They Invented Champagne" for far longer than I'd like to admit after watching this film.
