Review of Giant (1956) by Brian S — 01 Sep 2011
GIANT is as big and rich as Texas, but it's also perfectly paced, character driven and intelligent epic western. It deals with racial, class, and gender prejudice, as well as the development of the Lone Star State in the first half of the 20th century.
Rock Hudson does great work as Bick Benedict, tracking the character development of his lead from prideful, bigoted Texas rancher to enlightened husband and patriarch, and Elizabeth Taylor is appropriately feisty as the spirited Maryland belle instrumental in the change.
But the show gets stolen by James Dean, who's only a supporting character but whose presence oozes out of the ambitious ranchhand who symbolizes the change about to happen to the state.
