Review of Giant (1956) by Ninon M — 04 Aug 2017
'Giant' is -as its title suggests- blindingly big, whether it be in its length, its endless, boiling-hot Texan ranch, its awe-inspiring story taken from Ferber's novel, its sprawled narration or its evolving characters.
Perhaps too gigantic, since some (very few) weaker elements might lower the film. Anyway, 'Giant' is the the meeting of East and West, through the story of an aristocratic Eastern girl (Taylor) who marries an old-fashioned Texan rancher (Hudson), and meets a poor boorish man (Dean), who will later become an oil tycoon.
Still, what keeps us watching this -apart from its story- is the rare and precious sight of Dean in motion (and even aging) accompanied by a passionate Taylor and an excellent Hudson.
