Review of Giant (1956) by Cornelius S — 12 Jan 2019
This sweeping epic lacks the compelling score of other Westerns, but the sheer scale of the subject matter and a strong cast maintain the drama. The film is about a couple that learns to love each other despite the usual family quarrels.
The screenplay is deftly written, particularly in the scene where Taylor tries to become a part of the men's conversation. The film does drag in places, but surely the length is part of what makes a movie epic.
Elizabeth Taylor's ageing makeup looks unrealistic, but James Dean's character looks excellent throughout. This may be my favourite James Dean performance.
