Review of Giant (1956) by Chris M — 04 Jan 2011
As far as I am concerned, Giant is the best film ever made. The film is a throwback to the day where epic films don't require billion dollar special effects. They just required great acting and a daring message that resonates even in today's world.
To the uninitiated, Giant is the story of a land-rich cattle rancher who meets the love of his life while on a business trip. He brings his wife back to Texas, where they face multiple business and personal conflicts along the way. The movie spans most of their lifetime in Texas.
The standout performance is that of James Dean. It is one of the great performances of any time. If you want to find an equivalent, think of Daniel-Day Lewis in The Boxer or Gangs of New York. When you watch, you feel as if you are watching greatness. Whenever I hear a story about an actor investing all of him or herself into a role, I always think of this performance.
While Dean steals the show, it would be wrong of me to dismiss the other actors and actresses involved. Mercedes McCambridge is absolutely outstanding as well. After all, if am not mistaken, she won an Oscar for her role. Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor each put together a wonderful performance.
The battle against racism is a constant theme in movies. However, there don't seem to be a lot of vintage movies that address this topic. There are a few that come to mind, but most don't even come close. Giant is a movie that in my mind will live forever.
