Review of Ghost in the Shell (2017) by Stephen Y — 04 Apr 2017
The whole "whitewashing" controversy aside, Ghost in the Shell was certainly entertaining. ScarJo put on a stellar performance as always and the supporting cast were solid. The movie was visually very pleasing.
Special effects were extremely well-done and Rupert Sanders knows it, letting the characters drive around in the city to show off the futuristic city. Compared to most big budget action flicks, where they do not bother to establish a background story or plot, Ghost in the Shell was the other extreme.
The first two thirds of the movie was devoted into establishing and explaining a backstory. Granted the backstory is a complicated one, it really slowed down the movie and perhaps the movie would have been better off with less time spent on it.
Once the main conflict was finally established, it ends very anti-climatically. I was left wanting a more dramatic and visually-stunning showdown.
