Review of Ghost in the Shell (2017) by Mishajon — 18 Jul 2018
I saw this film with pretty low expectations, and I was aware of the immense love of the original 1995 film of the same name. I saw the original awhile back, and really loved it, so I was definitely worried going into this remake.
What a relief to say that the remake is quite good, and its quite good for a number of reasons: firstly...Scarlett Johannson is really good in the title role, she does have this other worldly quality about her which was perfectly suited to the character.
Secondly the visuals are astonishing, everything from the world views, the city scapes, the cyber punk stlye was beautifully evoked. And thirdly, I got the sense that this was a film made with love and respect for the original, whilst at the same time, looking ahead and being ambitious enough to be its own movie.
I was really impressed by it.
