While this movie is always criticized for being too complex or arrogant due to its thick philosophical atmosphere, it depends on taste or what you came looking for. If you are looking for an action movie then go watch Rambo, if you are looking for a beautiful story then go watch Millennium Actress.
This movie claims to be neither of these, it is a film posing questions about human existence and its significance. It builds off of the themes from the first film and incorporates vast amounts of literary and philosophy quotes form notable works or notable men.
It is unfair to judge a movie using the incorrect scale in which to grade it. Ie. the movie is not about Mototko, so don't penalize the film because she is not featured prominently. The story itself is very coherent and easy to follow provided you have the intellect of at least a high schooler.
If you are in a mood to think or be amazed by flawless visuals then this film is for you.
