Review of Gettysburg (1993) by Brent L — 05 Jul 2007
Perhaps one of the greatest, if not the greatest, war epics of all-time. Gettysburg masterfully paints the picture of numerous historical characters, detailing the human-face of war, the bravery and humility of combat, and the tragedy of the bloodiest battle in American history. As a historian who has lived with the story of Gettysburg since pre-school (York is only 45 miles from Gettysburg), I have watched and re-watched this film more than I can count. The acting is superb. The costuming is unparalleled (yes, I've been to the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond that houses many of the officers' uniforms, and let me say, the replicas are spot on). My only critique is that the filmmakers couldn't squeeze the 1st Minnesota's heroics into a four hour film. But then again, that addition would have added another hour.
I could write for hours, but I think I'll stop here, if you've even made it this far. :-).
