Review of Gettysburg (1993) by Dave B — 07 Aug 2008
Five stars. This is a great depiction of the battle that was the turning point in the Civil War. It gives a great portrayal of both the leaders and the men that fought under them on both sides, especially General (at that time, Colonel) Joshua Chamberlain of the Federal Army. Since Chamberlain came from Brunswick, Maine, my old stomping grounds, it made the movie especially meaningful.
The movie was remarkably evenhanded in its depiction of both sides. Some of the great moments were the mercy shown by Chamberlain to the disaffected prisoners, the love shown to Lee by the Southern army, the fight at Little Round Top, and Pickett's Charge. This is a marvelous movie!
