Review of Get Out (2017) by Late R — 20 Oct 2018
'Get Out' really is well-written and directed, managing to make a horror/thriller out of an already hideous situation - meeting your SO's parents for the first time - whilst adding an intriguing mystery and timely commentary on racism.
What's so clever, though, is that it doesn't go about it in any way that you might expect, keeping things mysterious with an increasingly bizarre atmosphere, until the fantastic and surprising crescendo of a final act.
The characters are brilliantly played by a talented cast (Kaluuya is superb) and the dialogue hones in on how alienating people can be (whether they mean to or not) when talking to someone of colour. Of course, Peele being Peele, you might expect at least some humour there; fear not, there is a bit of that, too.
Overall, it's just a really smart and entertaining film that, at the same time, manages to "air the dirty laundry", so to speak, and forces people to think about stereotypes, prejudice, racism and how we interact with one another in general.
Bringing that together in such an enjoyable way is no easy feat.
