Caine is at hia best here as cold, ugly gangster Jack Carter in this briliant revenge tale. The pacing is slower and the action lighter than modern audiences may be used to, but the grimy, chilly atmosphere and shocking conclusion still hold great power.
Avoid the recent American remake.
