Review of Get Carter (1971) by Johan A — 01 Jun 2008
Great gangster/revenge film that is one of the bleakest movies I can remember seeing in a very long time. The character Michael Caine plays is not a good guy, and is very hard to root for, especially in the second half.
There is a great deal of vagueness to Get Carter, with a lot of plot elements implied but unstated (typical of Mike Hodges films). The setting and the feel of this film is absolutely great, with the retched conditions of industrial Manchester bleak enough to make even the biggest Anglophile not want to ever visit England.
The violence in here is very hard to watch, and will turn off a lot of people. But if you want a revenge seeking anti-hero without any attempts to redeem or soften his character, you really should check this movie out.
Oh, and just do as I do, and pretend the remake with Stallone never happened.
