Review of Get Carter (1971) by Simon L — 25 Jan 2011
Nasty bastard shakes up the underworld in a search for his brother' killer in this seedy and brutal 70s revenge tale made all the more savage by its use of Newcastle locations and a B-list cast. The men are spotty alcoholic thugs, the women: tired and disaffected slags.
There's kiddie porn, corruption and murder galore and Caine wades through the filth like a merciless automaton (the scene where he knifes Albert to death in a grim bookie's back yard is chilling).
Hodges never bettered himself and the movie has taken its rightful place amongst the giants of the genre and deservedly so. Brilliant.
