Review of Gerry (2002) by Ali M — 06 Nov 2008
Hmm ... my mind is reeling from this one. I can't decide if I loved it or hated it. Beautiful landscapes and cinematography. Plot more or less non-existant. I can appreciate this, but it's most likely not something I'd see again.
I'm amused at the thought of a bigger-budget version of this movie being made with desert storms and killer snakes. Alas, so little happened, that I was clearly able to follow along and read a magazine at the same time.
Affleck and Damon are great together, but with the exception of a few scenes, I wouldn't call what they're doing here acting. As far as I know they are good friends in real life, and most of their dialogue feels unscripted.
It works for the most part, except for when they come up with bizarre terms like "rock marooned" and "dirt mattress." Then again, I'm aware that I have my own vocabulary with my best friends, so it rings true.
The final moments are very interesting. I think if the ending had been different, I'd have a more solid opinion of the movie. As it is, I'm left a little speechless, at least while it's still sinking in.
