Review of Gerry (2002) by Radek C — 21 Feb 2009
I understand why this movie can be tedious (hell, most reviews I came across were rather negative!), not much is going on and there are these long takes - for instance there is this 7 minute shot prior to a jump off the rock or another 5 minute long scene where we get to watch them walk, and all we can see are the faces, nothing else - after all, Van Sant had very little potential with a story like that, but had to fill up a 90-minute film with something, right? I know it can be off-putting to some, but I just loved that kind of cinematography.
We have so much time to observe and analyze, time to empathize a commiserate. I adored the music, its darkness insinuating an ominous ending to an unfortunate trip. A good one Mr Van Sant.
