Review of Gerald's Game (2017) by Shaun T — 28 Sep 2017
This is not for everyone as its subject matter is extremely dark but if you're a Stephen King fan, it is a must--a psychological tour-de-force with a heroine you will fall hard for. It is of course grisly--this is Stephen King--but the horrors aren't coming from supernatural clowns or tortured ghosts. As with most great King stories, the most terrorizing force is the mind--particularly the mind scarred by some human-caused trauma. Gerald's Game ain't pretty, but it's effective, haunting and even a bit uplifting. This is horror for adults. Highly recommend (with caution).
It was only coincidence that this was my 3rd Mike Flanagan directed movie this week. All three were terrific (Hush and Ouija: Origins of Evil being the other two). This guy is a first-rate director who knows exactly how to build suspense and incite his audience to invest. He has a big new fan.
