Review of Geostorm (2017) by Jamil N — 09 Oct 2017
If you think you've seen this movie before, you have, of course you have! The Day After Tomorrow, 2012, San Andreas, Into the Storm, hell even Sharknado are all movies you wish you were watching instead of this.
If you can get past the idea of Gerard Butler playing a "Satellite Designer" then you are in for a treat! The stone-faced seriousness with which the cast play this thing out is borderline hilarious. The Razzies must already have this thing on their short-list, or long list... very long list. Geostorm is going sweep this year!
I am convinced that they accidentally picked up a script for a video game and before they realized they were in too deep to halt production and just said: "fuck it, keep rolling".
The dialogue and effects are straight out of a video-game. Although saying that is a disservice to modern video-gaming. Some games have fantastic scripts, story, and voice-acting. The effects are on par with video games, however. As good as modern games look, they still aren't at a full cinematic level, but you expect that, it's a video game. A big budget (?) movie such as this has to do better. Perhaps when the effect department saw Gerard Butler was in it that they didn't really have to try very hard to impress.
What I will say in favor of Geostorm is that it does have a good message, and the ending was somewhat unexpected, and Ed Harris is... in it.
Go see it if you hate your eyes, ears, brain, and you are Gerard Butler. Otherwise, as the tagline says "Some things were never meant to been seen"... oh it's controlled, not seen. I'll change that before posting... NOT!
