Review of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) by Johnathon W — 22 Jul 2012
A comedy classic known best for the Marilyn Monroe's iconic performance but ages well thanks to the equally superb Jane Russell & Howard Hawks's smart direction. Monroe is excellent playing a seemingly dumb-blonde who is far more savvy than she appears (along with delivering her classic music number, "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend") while Russell delivers one-liners (more than a few a bit raunchy, even by today's standards) with the best of them.
The only under-written characters are the men, who seem to only serve to fall all over for the women, but when those women are Monroe & Russell, what other choice do they have. The kind of musical comedy you just don't see anymore.
