Review of Gender Wars (2015) by Anthony K — 27 Dec 2017
Fun, well acted, and upbeat despite moving at a slightly overlong pace, Battle of the Sexes is a perfectly entertaining tennis film which succeeds at making the audience root deeply for its protagonist. Carell, Riseborough, Carell and the rest are great, but that was a given. The dialogue is snappy and witty, never totally vilifying any of the characters involved (The Arm is the closest we get, even more so than Bobby Riggs), and I have to give a special shout to the finale tennis match. I don't know what special effects were involved there in meticulously recreating the climactic set, but it was completely convincing.
My only major complaints are that I would absolutely call this first-wave feminism - there is nothing intersectional about these relatively wealthy white people doing battle in a game that is generally reserved for elites; and again, that the movie may move a bit too slower some less patient audiences. Not one of the best films of the year, but completely solid all around.
