Review of Gattaca (1997) by Bill C — 10 Sep 2010
This movie bobs above and below reality so hauntingly you leave it with more questions about yourself than any of the characters. Even though the plot of the movie is very straight forward, I?ve watched this movie approx 20 times and each time come away with a different feeling(s).
Each role in the movie is acted to near perfection. Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman give the best, while understated roles of there careers. The director uses the normal sibling rivalry between the brother to extol on the effects of the genetic screening.
The movie to me is more a battle between our images of ourselves against the imperfect vessels we are born into. The movie starts with Vincent born in the usual way and like all children in the future is submitted to genetic screening.
The genetic screening in the near future cannot not tell you everything but enough to catch propensities for heart disease and such. Although it is illegal to discriminate against genetic shortcoming it is rampant.
Vincent is flagged as having a weak heart and is statistically expected to die before his 40s. He is unable to get any jobs above a janitor. His parent second son Anton is born using genetic screening.
He is as the story says still the combination of his parent, but just the best parts.
