Review of Gaslight (1944) by James N — 02 Jan 2009
I was aware of its classic status, but I put this one off for a long time, apparently with good reason. I have a distasteful habit of trying to guess where a narrative is headed, but really now, anyone who's sat through an episode of Scooby-Doo could tell you exactly where this plot is going from ten minutes in.
And it's not like there's any real suspense or danger, the film just plods along to its inevitable conclusion, with Bergman playing the most frantically passive character I've ever seen, never acting of her own accord.
As a melodrama, fine, the acting's admirable and the film's well made, but why hang it all on a silly mystery?
