Review of Gaslight (1944) by Robin P — 27 Aug 2010
I was finally able to watch one of the great Film Noir classics of the 40's with Boyer and Bergman doing some of their best work...which earned Ingrid Bergman a Best Actress award...and I can see why.
This film is a re-make of a 1940 movie which would be interesting to watch as well. Gaslight, very aptly named, is a psychological thriller which holds your attention as the main character Paula is systematically made to think she is going insane.
The tension just keeps building as the story unfolds...the climax and ending left a little to be desired but this was a wonderfully acted film which also had Angela Lansbury in her first role as a bratty, loose housekeeper.
Many elements of this movie stuck with me after viewing...a look, a glance, a scene, a costume, an effect...I would say it is definitely worth the watch!
