Review of Gangs of New York (2002) by Ryan V — 15 Feb 2012
The Civil War draft riot and the historic corruption of the Boss Tweed ring serve as backdrop to this drama about a gangland youth looking for revenge. Gangs of New York is notable for being the first of several collaborations between Leonardo DiCaprio and director Martin Scosese.
While DiCaprio does a fine job as the lead, anyone who says that Daniel Day-Lewis does anything besides dominate the movie is simply kidding themselves. While not the best film of any of the featured players, Gangs of New York is worth seeing for its grand scope and powerhouse acting.
