Review of Ganga (1960) by Adam R — 05 Jun 2012
Pack your bags and take a Technicolor trip to Bengal, circa the late 1940s and the time of Indian independence. Your captain is director Jean Renoir, weaving a tale of characters trying to discover their proper place in the world, all the while outside circumstances keep crashing down around them.
Among the stops: misplaced adolescent love; a solider trying to outrun his past; a half-Indian/British woman wondering which ethnicity to embrace; and eventually, a family dealing with tragedy. The lush tones of Bengal are truly a marvel to behold in this, Renoir's first colour film, and the themes prove truly engrossing.
Satisfying on several levels.
