Review of Game Night (2018) by Filipe C — 04 Mar 2018
Game Night is one of those rare high-concept comedies that actually fulfills the promise of the premise. Drawing inspiration from Fincher's The Game, the narrative penned by Mark Perez offers plenty of twists and turns, both paying homage to classics of the genre, and rewarding the viewer's intelligence.
Behind the camera, Daley and Goldstein's dynamic directing keeps things moving along briskly, and they take it up a notch with a particularly inspired Pac-Man-like sequence. The cast does the rest.
.. and what a group of talented individuals they are. From Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams inspired pairing to Jesse Plemons' terrific deadpan turn, the cast's chemistry is felt in spades. And the cherry on top is Cliff Martinez's electrifying, consistently reenergizing score.
At a time that audiences are focused on films with a social message, along comes an unexpected gem of entertainment, which might very well be the best studio comedy since The Hungover.
