Review of Gambit (2012) by Alfred C — 22 Nov 2012
When Gambit does work (Deaneâ(TM)s Savoy escape sequence) it manages to get some genuine laughs and fun out of the proceedings. Sadly there is always that crushing reminder (a cheap fart gag for instance) that this is one of the Coenâ(TM)s weaker writing efforts and director Michael Hoffman (The Last Station) seems unsure how to handle it as a result.
You could do worse but from a capable director, Oscar winning writers and a multiple award-winning cast, Gambit just feels as though it could and should have been more than what is here. A silly remake that could have approached good, were it not for a script that feels like an early draft and an overall feeling of unimportance.
