Review of Fury (2014) by Jonathan B — 03 Jul 2015
You know I can't think why this hasn't been tried before at the movies? I have seen plenty of war movies down the years but they have been about infantry soldiers, paratroopers, fighter pilots, submariners and members of the navy.
I really can't think of another time that the focus has been on a tank division and yet it is perfect for cinema. You have a tight-knit group of men, each totally reliant on the efforts of the others.
They are in a highly confined space and under extreme stress. This makes for some nail biting moments and great action sequences. The cast is spectacularly good with Brad Pitt absolutely nailing the tough, arrogant and heroic commanding officer.
There's some disturbing scenes where the horror of war is laid bare on the screen in some grisly detail. The language is shocking but feels right for this tense and grittily, masculine situation.
It feels like a genuine reflection of the terrible nature of war and as such is a grim, grinding and unrelenting movie but I thought this was a magnificent piece of work and one of the best war genre films I've seen in a long time.
I'd fully expect it to become something of a cult classic.
