Review of Funny Games (1997) by Mark F — 05 Apr 2008
This movie would be better if Haneke weren't so condescending about the whole affair. Watching this movie feels like sitting through a lecture by a professor in which the subtext of every sentence is "I know more than you do so PAY ATTENTION to my profundity.".
As a critique of horror films, it's reasonably effective, but too many moments fall flat and come across as rote horror scenes rather than postmodern critiques of such scenes. Haneke has done and will do better.
