Review of Funny Games (1997) by Sergio O — 20 Jan 2012
A very original horror story. This was remade in English and it was done exactly the same. Now normally I would be critical of that but in this case, the original was so well made and cast, that they didn't want to redo the film, they just wanted to do it again but in English for the non-German, non-subtitle tolerant market, which is fair enough.
I understand that because this is a very good film with a few quirks to spin your head on top of the twisted story. I actually enjoyed the English version a little more for several reasons, the weird politeness of the two boys is not really noticable in German, because a lot of German choose to speak posh and polite anyway, it's not uncool (they don't know the word cool either).
I also preferred the cast in the English version, Tim Roth and Naomi Watts was a good combination, and by the way, has there ever been a German film made without Ulrich Muehe starring?
