Review of Funny Face (1932) by Andy L — 24 Oct 2009
Was prompted to watch this movie by the 'Gloden Age of Couture' exhibition. Bits and pieces of it were shown there. Turns out, those bits were the best of it already, haha. That said, I'm still much impressed by the little modern dance Audrey did in the pub. Have never seen her danced that much in other movies and surprisingly she CAN dance. The moves are a bit cartoony and she looks like Bambi with those big eyes and slim limbs in tight black outfit.
The storyline ain't much to impress and the tunes ain't very catchy, but the costumes look great. Worth skimming through, even if only for looking at the clothes designed by Givenchy. And there are some cute cinematography tricks during the 'photoshoots' too.
One other thing that strikes a mental note to me after watching, is not to distaste things that might look superficial at first sight (like Fashion, which Audrey disses as " a chichi and an unrealistic approach to self-esteem" at first), they might have more meaning to it when seen with a different attitude. And sometimes things which seem deep and intellectual at first might turn out to be just a scam, like the professor...
