Review of From Here to Eternity (1953) by J M — 29 Jun 2007
One of the first old school black/white movies I ever saw, and still the best.
Romantical/drama/comedy/war/boxing all these genres are put together greatly in this Best Picture oscar winner of 1953.
The weeks leading upto Pearl Harbor are explored in this wonderful movie.
Burt Lancaster is the battle scarred Sgt., Frank Sinatra is the trouble making Private, and Montgomary Clift is the bugler/boxer with a past.
All the characters cross pathes and have to work together to help in the Pearl Harbor attacks.
This is a movie that deserves all the acclaim it gets. It never slows down and is actually fasinating to watch. Sinatra won best supprting actor oscar for his role. And this role is mocked in the film Godfather. Sinatra was at a low point at his career, and used mob ties to get the job. Either way its a great film.
