Review of From Here to Eternity (1953) by Dominic J — 13 Aug 2009
This Oscar winning melodrama about life in an army barracks on Hawaii on the eve of World War 2 is a powder keg of emotions. The film won Best Picture and Frank Sinatra in his comeback role as a scrappy private received the Best Supporting Oscar.
Ernest Borgnine is genuinely sadistic as Sergeant Fatso who runs the stockade where prisoners are held. Burt Lancaster plays the top sergeant of a platoon who commits adultery with the wife of his commanding officer.
Powerful stuff!
