Review of From Hell (2001) by Daniel H — 02 Jun 2011
The period detail of late Victorian England is the star in this adaptation of Alan Moore's graphic novel about Jack the Ripper and the Whitechapel murders of 1888. Johnny Depp gives an understated performance as the clairvoyant, opium-smoking, absinthe drinking Inspector Aberline, with Robbie Coltrane in a great supporting role as his sergeant.
The Ripper's line that he gave birth to the twentieth century is true in terms of giving birth to serial murderers that got a lot of coverage in the mass media.
