Review of Frida (2002) by Christie B — 06 Mar 2012
Salma Hayek is well regarded as a beautiful woman, but it's her underrated talent as an actress that carries this biopic of legendary Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. Hayek portrays Frida's artistic ambition, Marxist political beliefs, bisexuality, and health struggles with feisty passion and resilient charisma.
She's well supported by Julie Taymor's striking direction and the capable cast. (Alfred Molina, in particular, shines as Frida's tempestuous husband.) Combined together, the visual flair, capable direction, strong acting, and Hayek's dedication to her role makes Frida transcend the typical Hollywood biography.
