Review of Freeheld (2015) by Debbie W — 13 Sep 2015
In spite of a strong performance by the more-or-less flawless Julianne Moore, Freeheld fails to deliver an emotional punch. While it's easy to feel sympathetic for the main characters simply out of guilt, nothing presented on screen draws the audience in.
It could be the rushed courtship of Laurel (Moore) and Stacie (Ellen Page), the snore-inducing legislative sessions (Peter Sollett's direction is pretty by the books), or simply the fact that we live in a country that now allows same-sex couples to get married.
But whatever the root, Freeheld turns what could be a rousing reminder of how far the LGBT movement has come in just a short amount of time into a boring, limp time capsule.
