Freeheld is a good example of a great cast and a great story does not necessarily add up to a great film. The true story of a gay couple in New Jersey fighting for their rights should be totally engaging and emotionally strong.
Sadly this film is hamstrung by an obvious script and average direction. The message of acceptance is as subtle as a sledgehammer. Michael Shannon soars as usual in a supporting role but ultimately this film never truly satisfies.
