Review of Free Guy (2021) by Compi24 — 18 Sep 2021
Brushing aside the teeth-gnashing cringe that'll no doubt ensue after every instance of a famous streamer trying to chunder their way through a measly sentence of dialogue, "Free Guy" actually offers up some surprisingly decent entertainment all throughout.
Some of the headier topics tend to exceed the film's grasp a little bit, sure, but I'm honestly impressed it even tried to go where it went. The timeliness of some of the film's true-to-life parallels also adds to the relevance of it all.
Part of me wishes I was in the target demographic for this, so that I'd be able to enjoy it more, but it is what it is. The core of the story -- as much as it resembles an occasionally shameless "Lego Movie"/"Truman Show" mash-up -- remains watchable at its worst and endearing fun at its best.
Not a regrettable watch, on the whole.
