Review of Freaks (1932) by Hunter D — 17 Aug 2008
I've never seen anything like this come out of Hollywood, especially afterwards. I'm shocked that people were so terrified by th is movie upon its release (so much so that it was banned), as it is more of a morality play than a horror film.
It's fantastic that such a visionary piece of work was able to sneak through the system (thanks in large part to Browning's success with 'Dracula' a year earlier). It's a deeply personal film from its director, and its still alive and kicking in pop culture, thanks to the Ramones.
It's a painful and sad film, but it put a great smile on my face, as its one that a lot of people can certainly connect with on some level.
