Review of Freaked (1993) by Lee M — 08 Dec 2007
Alex Winter's magnum opus of absurdist comedy that was raped in the ass by Fox in a similar to fashion to Mike Judge's recent "Idiocracy". A very funny film for those with an appreciation for smart/dumb humor. The humor here is so stupid/clever it reaches heights of surrealism uncharted by even the Zucker-Abraham-Zucker team.
The most successful aspects of the whole film are definitely the makeup and effects. The stars are often unrecognizable under the gross and cartoon-like makeup (except for Randy Quaid who makes a wonderful villainous scientist). The special effects are truly special, including some wonderful glimpses of well-done stop motion (sometimes more enjoyable to watch than cheap and easy CGI). The cast is a wet dream for fans of late 80s / early 90s camp. The casting director certainly had a bizarre sense of humor, as they loaded on plenty of notable non-talents (Brook Shields, Bobcat Goldwaith, andMr T.). This won't appeal to all tastes, but its one of the few successful "instant" cult films I've seen (much better than anything from Troma).
