Review of Frank (2014) by Brett H — 07 Dec 2014
A hipster's wet-dream that is padded with the indie-movie checklist and though it has some very funny moments, it mostly didn't work for me. I love Michael Fassbender and I'm always interested in his projects, and though his acting and the rest of the cast is solid, I mostly didn't care about any of these characters because they were too unbelievably quirky and felt fake.
The "music" their band plays is just straight-up noise and it's one of those moments where you have to be a stoner and say, "whoah man, that's like, far-out" to see the art in it.
The film does take a decidedly dark turn in the last act, but I feel like it all amounted to nothing in regards to story progression. Critics may love this one for being off-beat and "original"; but I love indie films too, and this one was just too uninvolving and felt like a Wes Anderson knock-off.
There's a funny reference (whether intended or not) to This Is Spinal Tap that I quite enjoyed, so that's something.
