Review of Foxcatcher (2014) by Ben T — 22 Aug 2015
Foxcatcher is a film that had loads of potential to be an amazing movie. This is based off of a very disturbing and quite interesting story. Unfortunately Foxcatcher is a decent movie with elements of greatness.
This film is really lead by fantastic acting, Channing Tatum is really good, he plays the character very subtly and is absolutely brilliant. Steve Carell is amazing, he plays a very disturbed and creepy character really well and it's a very different role for him.
Mark Ruffalo is also really great, he gives a very good peformance and he's a very likable character. This film also has very good writing and the cinematography is excellent, it's beautifully well filmed and every shot looks amazing.
However Foxcatcher is a very flawed movie which is a huge shame. The direction is fine, it's not very remarkable and I don't think Bennett Miller deserved an Oscar nomination for this movie. This films editing is also a bit weird, the scenes range from really short to really long and drawn out and it was just weird.
This film is also really badly paced, the film is just over two hours but it feels much longer, a lot of scenes in this movie just feel like they are going nowhere up until the ending its actually quite boring.
However the ending of this film is fantastic. If you know the story this film is based off, you will know that John du Pont played by Steve Carell did a very disturbing thing that to this day people are still not sure why he did it.
It's handled very well and it's actually a very emotional and amazing ending to such an average film. Overall Foxcatcher is a disappointing and average movie. The film is a fairly mixed bag however it has great elements that could have made a phenomenal movie.
I'm glad I saw it but I can't imagine myself watching it again. B-.
