Review of Force Majeure (2014) by David L — 06 Jun 2015
Yes, the visuals are gorgeous and the cinematography is excellent, but the real substance of the film is what truly matters, a scathing critique of modern masculinity and the nature of male emotional stagnation rooted in wit and nuance.
Östlund's clever visual cues add to this narrative (the flimsy chords of the ski-lift mimicking the unstable nature of the film's main relationship), and the subsequent questions on monogymy, marriage, and morality make for compelling viewing.
