Review of Force Majeure (2014) by Joedeckard — 07 Apr 2019
Utterly brilliant and chilling exploration of a marriage rotting from within. When a couple on a ski-ing trip are faced with an avalanche, the woman runs to save her children while her husband goes instead for his smart phone and iPad.
While the writer-director clearly has strong feelings about marriage - the woman is undoubtedly the stronger character of the two (within the story terms) and as the man falls apart, it is clear that underneath it all he is merely a little boy - already crushed by the avalanche of trying to be a man.
While this may or may not be director Ruben Ostlund's aim, his unconscious wins the day. Fabulous.
