It's really very good. It was unusal for MGM to make fantasy/sci fi movies but when they made this one they went all out. Fantastic effects, eerie music, scary story line... sure it looks old but that's whats charming about it.
There are a few shots that are amazing even today, one scene in particular is very good, the shot of them crossing a bridge into the 1000 levels of the underground abandoned alien city... awesome.
