One of the definitive sci-fi movies of all time.
Supposedly an update of Shakespeare's The Tempest (I cannot vouch for this as I haven't read it), Forbidden Planet has an intelligent screenplay, well-written characters and iconic scenes. Some may say it's dated now but it will always be a classic of the genre.
