Superb closure to the Costner baseball trilogy. That this can be held alongside the brilliant Bull Durham and Field of Dreams is a fantastic achievement.
Baseball is the most cinematic of sports, and here we have 9 innings of drama aligned once more with a true movie star and baseball fan in Kevin Costner. His performance is earnest but convincing with a profound decency of character too often lacking in Hollywood cinema (at least since Jimmy Stewart, anyway).
The story weaves together the personal and professional lives of Costner's character to great dramatic affect, touching all the very best allegoric bases baseball can offer.
Had it not been for a very ropey Kelly Preston performance, we might have had something quite magical.
